Greetings class,
My name is Ioan Elvis Sersea and I am the facilitator of this course. I’m including my bio below in hopes that you will be more comfortable while we interact with each other in this course. Please post your bios as replies to the thread and include your full names in the subject line.
Education runs strong in my family and we do it not as a means to an economic destination, but as a passion and as a part of day-to day life.
My wife was a civil engineer in Romania, where she studied the construction of roads and bridges. Recently, after close to 8 years of adult education and community college courses in ESL, office administration, and real estate, she is about to start an online program in Cancer Coding Management.
Our son is 6 and now half-way through first grade. We’ve been blessed to have him healthy and keen to learn, and through a daily routine of reading since he was a week old, his word decoding and reading skills are off the charts. He is currently reading 70-120 pages a day at a 7th grade reading level.
I value family though I have a very small one. My parents brought my sister and me to the US in the early 1980’s. Due to illness, I lost my father in 1989, and my mother in 1999. My sister moved to Boston, MA where she earned a degree in psychology from Boston University and is now a senior analyst with a major pharmaceutical company. She has recently asked me to “walk her down the aisle” in Aruba, at the end of October last year, with my son as the ring bearer.
English was my third language, after Romanian and French, but I was fortunate to have dedicated and knowledgeable teachers who helped me succeed. Due to my father’s health issues, I was contemplating dropping out of 9th grade to go to a trade school instead and help my family financially. Luckily, an English teacher motivated me to stay and be creative, and my parents’ desire that I stay in school thus resonated louder. I took additional high school courses and graduated in 11th grade, then went on to study English at California State University, Long Beach in the late 80’s. I took a variety of courses in education and earned a teaching certificate. After getting married and having a child under way, I knew I had to continue my education and be a good role model. I earned a MA in Teaching and Learning in 2004. In 2008 I completed my MA in English, also online from National..
I’ve worked out of desire and necessity since 1989. After my father passed away, it was up to me to support the family. For the rest of my undergraduate studies, I worked 2-3 part time jobs and continued with a full load of school. I have been blessed that most of my working life I worked in various areas of education, from elementary school TA, community college tutor, Language Arts tutoring coordinator, instructional assistant, middle school teacher, high school teacher, ESL/Bilingual Coordinator, and now part-time online faculty with University of Phoenix, part-time community college ESL Lab instructor, and English Language Department Chair for a rapidly growing virtual school in Southern California. I plan on continuing my education towards an administrative certificate in hopes to some day become an online high school principal.
A couple of years ago I started a small educational services company, mostly as a hobby. This enabled me to design and teach test preparation, reading comprehension, and vocabulary workshops at a local college as part of their community services. In addition, I now have a web server and work with a team of knowledgeable IT professionals who have been helping me launch various sets of free niche-based services including well over one hundred of what I call “edu-social websites”. The business is not paying off for itself, but is, like education, a passion of mine that I hope to learn more about and excel at, with each day that passes. As an passionate technology-using educator, I have participated and presented at numerous workshops about using technology as an effective academic tool. Whenever I’m not in front of my computer, or checking my smart phone, I enjoy the company of my family, taking short weekend trips to our cabin in the Southern California mountains, or long drives up and down the California coast. Whenever we’re not out of town, we enjoy watching films, exploring neighboring communities, reading, and dining.
